Our Community

The North Side Neighborhood of Kalamazoo is an urban area with about 6,000 residents. Our close proximity to downtown Kalamazoo provides easy access to arts and entertainment, restaurants, retail shops, financial institutions, transportation and large festivals and special events.
Our People:
North side is over 11% White, 83% African-American and 4% Hispanic/ Latino.

Our Strengths:
North Side has many strengths and assets we are proud of including:

Our Challenges:
Like many communities, Northside faces many challenges as well :
  • Poor relationships with the law enforcement community
  • Lack of affordable, quality housing
  • Few employment opportunities
  • High crime rate
  • Drug use
  • Lack of programs for youth
  • Low educational success
  • Lack of coordination of services among non-profits
  • Difficult relationships among people of different races
  • Teen pregnancy
 Our Communities for All Ages

The Northside Communities for All Ages team is a group of residents of different ages and local organizations who are joining together to create a better, more cohesive environment for the community as a whole.   Together we are engaging the community and helping residents of all ages bring high quality, intergenerational supports to the alternative middle school and the children and families of that school in ways that engage, build leadership, remove barriers to learning, and provide enrichment, encouragement and support so children can succeed in school.
