Our Communities For All Ages Team:
Our CFAA team has resident leaders of different age groups as well as staff from various local social service organizations. During our assessment phase last year, we interviewed hundreds of New Rochelleans of different ages and backgrounds about their experience living in New Rochelle.
While some of our strengths and challenges varied according to age group, we found many commonalities.
AREAS OF COMMON CONCERN:
“Not enough free activities, or if there are activities, not enough knowledge of them.”
Communication and connection were the strongest challenges across the age-span. Residents of all ages feel that poor communication exists about city offerings, organizations, and activities. At the same time, each age group sees the community as a series of “silos”, with great geographical, ethnic, and/or socioeconomic segregation as a problem. Residents of all ages desire more free community gatherings, celebrating the diversity of the city’s residents. Also, technology was mentioned as an isolator in all three groups. People of all ages felt that volunteer opportunities were difficult to obtain.
SOME DIFFERENCES:
Youth: Seek job training; free, safe places to socialize
Adults: Time is valued; not enough time available to enjoy life, due to work and parenting responsibilities
