Highlandtown
In addition to the city’s designated Highlandtown neighborhood the "community" we work in includes two “neighborhoods” directly north of Highlandtown: Patterson Park and Baltimore Highlands. These neighborhoods had their boundaries designated by the city much later than historic Highlandtown, but we consider them part of our community. These two neighborhoods include many African American families that have always lived here but have been pushed farther north due to real estate practices.
Additionally, our neighborhood schools draw predominately from families living in these neighborhoods.
Many other “communities” exist and overlap within the neighborhood , These include newer communities of Latino immigrants predominantly from Mexico as well as Native Americans predominately from the Lumbee tribe who resettled in Baltimore over 50 years ago and the vast majority of these families and their descendents live in Highlandtown. It also includes over 500 refugees per year that are resettled mostly in
Southeast Baltimore and most recently are arriving from Ethiopia, Congo, Somalia, Iraq, Nepal and Bhutan. These communities are an important part of our neighborhood as are the long time residents.
Highlandtown sees CFAA as an opportunity to create an initiative that capitalizes on the wealth of such great diversity. The Highlandtown CFAA team is in the assessment and planning phase. Through the strategic partnership between the core team members and community residents of different ages, 370 social capital surveys have been conducted, as well as focus groups, one on ones, and relationship building. Highlandtown plans to develop an initaitve that brings together the diverse community members to improve the neighborhood and local relationships.
