Our Community

San Clemente, the southernmost city in Orange County, like many Orange County cities, it has been experiencing changing demographics and population growth with ever-increasing Latino and low-income populations. Central San Clemente is part of the city’s federally funded Community Development Block Grant areas, is part of the San Clemente gang injunction and has been identified by local hospitals as one of the highest needs areas in South County.
 
Our People:
  • According to the 2000 census, the population in the census tracts that it incorporates is 10,460 persons. This core area has a total of 1,456 families with five or more people in the household, the highest concentration for families in San Clemente. 
  • Central San Clemente is centered around Las Palmas Elementary School which is composed of 27% White, 61.9% Latino, 0.3% African-American, 9.9% Multiple, 0 .3 % Asian and .6% other students where 60% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch and 55% of the students are English language learners.
  • The area median household income is $38,750 with 14.9% of families living below poverty level. These are conservative numbers. Traditionally this population is under counted.  
  • Central San Clemente is a mixed use commercial /residential area and has the highest renter occupancy rate of the city. Out of 1,480 total housing units, 1,073 units or 73% are rented occupied.   
  • Central San Clemente residents have lived in the United States an average of 15.5 years and they have lived in their present community an average of 9.77. More than half of the residents have less than High School Diploma.
Our Strengths: San Clemente has a rich community fabric with lots of community organizations, churches and hospitals that are working together throught he San Clemente Collaborative.   The police department and city staff work closely with residents to create changes and improvements in the community.  There are many community leaders who volunteer their time to make San Clemente a great place to live.  These residents help make San Clemente a more inclusive and healthy place to live.  It is because of these key leaders from different segments of the community that San Clemente is a wonderful place to launch the Communities for All Ages initiative.

Common Needs Among All Age Groups:
  • Programs and activities for youth (gang prevention, sports, culture) and for health programs for parents and seniors
  • Improvement of parks, restrooms, playground, sidewalks, and lighting in their neighborhood
  • Healthy grocery stores, healthy life style and good nutrition, exercise and no drinking or smoking
Our Communities for All Ages:
We have four unique groups working to make the Communities for All Ages a successful team: a youth group of middle and high school students, a senior group, an adult/parent group and a partners group made of of community leaders and organizations. All the groups came together for a community forum and decided that parenting education was their combined priority. The group is now meeting together as one team on a regular basis.
